Here’s another Blog by a Mississauga Chiropractor…

In the sixth grade, I remember joining the school cross country team. I joined because my buddy convinced me that it would be fun. “We would get to leave school to go away for competitions.” That was his big selling point. However, during each practice, I remember feeling like a big elephant was sitting on my chest as I struggled to keep up. After my first & last cross country meet, I chose to give up long distance running and focus on the short distances.


Throughout high school, I excelled in the short sprints. I utilized my speed in sports such as football, basketball, baseball & soccer. I figured that different sports were meant for different body types, and I had a sprinter’s body.

Entering my late 20s, recreational team sports became just an after thought. Years had passed since I had utilized my speed, and thus my running was pretty much non-existent. After my first son was born, I started to pack on a few pounds. Standing at a lofty 5 feet 6 inches tall, my then 200 pound frame was not the weight I had envisioned for myself. So I decided to give running another shot.

Day 1 was a struggle. The goal of running for 1 hour was humbly shortened to trotting & walking for 30 minutes. Each day got better, and eventually I did hit my 1 hour goal of running. In the summer of 2007, I asked my wife if she wanted to run a half marathon with me. After the initial shock had worn off, we joined the Running Room half-marathon clinic with a goal to run the Toronto half-marathon. The clinic was very enjoyable for the both of us. We were voted craziest couple because we were so hooked on running that we signed up for every race in sight. I guess running five half-marathons in a 2 month span, is kind of over doing it a little.

To this date, I’ve run 21 half marathons, 8 full marathons and numerous other shorter race distances. I still consider myself a young runner. I have been told that a long distance runner does not reach his/her peak until 7-12 years of serious training. Currently, I am 5 years into my new favourite sport, and I am enjoying every moment of it.
