In the summer of 1979, a group of friends: Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney), Alice Dainard (Elle Fanning), Charles Kaznyk (Riley Griffiths), Cary (Ryan Lee), Martin (Gabriel Basso) & Preston (Zach Mills), from a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a “super 8 movie” and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy Jackson Lamb (Kyle Chandler) tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.
I enjoyed this film. The interactions & dialogue from the teens reminded me of my favourite childhood movies such as the Goonies or Stand By Me. The chemistry among the young actors make us accept their long friendships and related personalities. The movie itself was a scarier version of E.T.: The Extra-terrestrial, with the alien looking more like a big spider than a cute brown creature. I also liked the 1970s-1980s style of clothing and décor throughout the movie.
Overall, I’d give this movie 6/10 stars. It’s a movie to definitely check out. Happy Viewing!
