Do you suffer from shoulder pain?
Does the pain become worse with overhead activity, repetitive movements or sleeping on the shoulder?
If so, you could be suffering from shoulder impingement syndrome, a common cause of shoulder pain that occurs when the tendons of the shoulder joint becomes compressed between the bones of the shoulder complex. Mechanical compression and repetitive motion can cause irritation and inflammation of the tendon leading to rotator cuff tendonitis – inflammation of the tendons of the shoulder girdle.
Symptoms usually begin in the top-outer portion of the shoulder. There may be mild pain all the time, with sudden pain when reaching overhead and pain when lowering the arm from an overhead position. Weakness of the shoulder may also be present. If not treated, the condition may worsen, in some cases leading to tearing of the tissue.
Common causes include repetitive overhead arm movements and overuse injuries, seen with swimming and tennis. Other causes include weakening and degeneration within the tendon due to aging, the formation of bone spurs and/or inflammatory tissue within the space above the rotator cuff (bursitis).
Chiropractic care can help with the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder impingement and other shoulder related injuries. Your chiropractor may prescribe specific exercises to help strengthen the shoulder girdle and prevent further aggravation with overhead movement of the arm.
