Here’s another blog from a Mississauga Chiropractor…
Have you suffered from calf pain with playing tennis? Are you unable to play because of your pain?
If so, you may be suffering from a condition called Tennis Leg.
Tennis Leg is caused by a sudden contraction of the muscles in your leg during activities such as tennis, aerobics, racquetball and baseball. Injury usually occurs when a sudden, forceful (eccentric) contraction occurs in the calf muscle (gastrocnemius). This forceful movement can cause rupture or tearing of the muscle causing pain and inability to walk.
Symptoms: Sudden intense pain, swelling and bruising are common symptoms with difficulty walking or inability to walk. A popping sensation at the time of injury is also common as if being kicked or struck by an object.
Causes: Tennis Leg is caused by damage to the muscles/tendons that allow your ankle to move and point your toes downward. The damage is typically related to an excessive and forceful leg contracture. Tennis Leg is not limited to tennis players. It is commonly seen in other sports such as baseball and basketball with movements involving sudden forceful leg movements and quick acceleration/deceleration.
Tennis Leg is most common in men ages 30 to 50. Improper stretching and tight calf muscles can increase risk of developing Tennis Leg. Inadequate conditioning/warm up can also increase risk of developing Tennis Leg.
Chiropractic care can help with the diagnosis and treatment of Tennis Leg and other leg related pain. Various treatment options (i.e. acupuncture, electrotherapy, stretches, exercises) may be used to help to decrease pain and restore movement. Tennis Leg is very responsive to chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic Care can help you get back to your daily activities with less pain and improved range of motion. Don’t let your leg pain stop you from continuing with the sports that you enjoy. With appropriate treatment, you can get back into the game.
