Tension Headaches

Cause:

  • Stress/ lack of sleep
  • Neck Injuries

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Pain located occipito-nuchal or bifrontal region
  • Pain is like a squeeze/tightness in the temple
  • Neck injuries
  • May occur under emotional distress

Muscles/ Joints Affected:

  • Suboccipitals
  • Thyrohyoid muscle
  • Omohyoid muscle
  • Mylohyoid muscle

Treatment/ Management:

  • Myofascial trigger point technique – Massage therapy
  • ART (Active Release Technique) – to affect muscles
  • hot/cold compress
  • Stress/Relaxation therapy
  • Acupuncture
  • Electrotherapy

Rehab Exercises:

Stretch #1

  • Turn your neck to the side and use the arm your head is facing to stretch your neck. Repeat both sides 10 times

Neck Rolls:

  • Sit down, look to your left and bring your chin down and around your chest to the right side. Repeat 10- 15 times

Child’s Pose:

  • Kneeling on the floor, keeping your toes together.
  • Place both hands on the floor and slowly bring your forehead to the ground.
  • Keeping the hands extended above your hand.
  • Stay for at least 30-40 seconds each time and repeat 15 times

Prognosis:

  • Can be chronic if the cause of stress is not changed
