Rotator Cuff Strain



  • Lifting/ Pulling
  • FOOSH Injury (fall on an out stretched- hand)
  • Violent blow applied to shoulder

Signs and Symptoms:

  • Immediate pain after injury
  • Popping/ tearing sensation at moment of injury
  • Muscle spasms of shoulder and shoulder girdle

Muscles/ Joints Affected:

  • Supraspinatus
  • Infraspinatus
  • Subscapularis
  • Teres Minor

Treatment/ Management:

  • ART (Active Release Technique)
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Rest and ice, immobilize for acute stage
  • Over counter anti-inflammatory agents and nutrition

Rehab Exercises:

  • Lying on your stomach on a table/ bed, put one palm out dangling and lift elbow 90 degree up so your hand is beside your head. Repeat for other hand, each does 20 reps for 3 times
  • Lying on an exercise mat, have your arm rest palm down on the mat at a 90 degree angle in elbows and your thumbs are up. Retract the shoulder blades as you attempt to externally rotate the arm. Repeat at least 15 times

Empty can exercise:

  • Hold a dumbbell in your hand and lift your arm until it is far out to the side of your body and pretend to twist your wrist downward like you are emptying a can of pop. Lift up dumbbell up and down


  • Mild strain is 2-4 weeks
  • Moderate is 4-12 weeks
  • Severe is 6- 12 weeks
