Carpal Tunnel Syndrome



  •  Direct external pressure on tunnel, medial nerve and tendons in tunnel
  • Prolonged wrist use in full flexion and extension


  • Pain and numbness/ tingling in the palmar surface of the thumb and radial two and one half fingers
  • Worse at night
  • Clumsiness with precision gripping

Muscles, Joints Affected:

  • Lumbricals, Abductor Pollicis Brevis and Flexor Pollicis Brevis

Treatment/ Management:

  • Immobilization of wrist in a splint, occasionally ice (initial treatment)
  • R.O.M stretches
  • Gradual stretching
  • Medication (vitamin B6), Inflammatory Drugs
  • Soft tissue therapy on the carpal fascia area

Rehab Exercises:

  • Straighten both wrists and keep palm of hand facing upward
  • Repeat 5 times
  • Make a tight fist with both hands
  • Repeat 5 times
  • Extend one arm out with palm facing up
  • Cross the other arm under and pull back and hold on to the thumb
  • Pull back the thumb a little and hold for 10 seconds
  • Repeats 3-4 times.


  • Range from minor inconvience to disabling condition
  • If CTS is mild, symptoms subside after treatment
