Here’s another blog from a Chiropractor inMississauga…

On Sunday May 13, 2012, I caddied Maria and her co-worker Susan at the Sporting Life 10K race in Downtown Toronto.  This was Maria’s 3 time doing this particular race.  Her previous times were 48:29 in 2008, and 51:18 in 2010 (9 months post-baby).  Now in 2012, Maria was hoping to get back to her sub 50 minute time.  I did warn her that her lack of training may hinder this lofty-goal.

At this year’s race, the big draw was the $50 Sporting Life gift certificate.  This appetizing incentive attracted many of Maria’s otherCreditValleyHospital– Radiation Therapy co-workers.  I think there were about 17 of them in total.

More than 22,000 people turned out to walk or run the 10 kilometres downhill from Youge   Streetat Castlefield   Ave.to the finish line at FortYork.  That’s up from about 14,000 participants last year.  The run raised $1.9 million for Camp Oochigeas, a camp for children with cancer, as well as its in-hospital facility at Sick Kids and after-school camp at Ooch Downtown in Toronto.

Before any runners crossed the finish line, the ribbon was broken by Rich Vanderwal, 41, who rocketed through the course in his racing wheelchair in just over 22 minutes, all the more impressive given the roads were slippery from a morning drizzle.  He said that he reached 54 km/h heading downYouge   Street.

The top male runner was Shoaib Ikram of Waterloo in a time of 31:13.  Megan Van Keulen of Beamsville was the fastest female finisher in a time of 35:14.  Maria didn’t quite meet her goal, but she was really happy with her time of 51:35.  She was 319/1694 women ages 30-34.

After the race, the girls picked up their medals and we walked around the post-race expo.  We did see an interesting booth where they had a jumbo screen with a simulation of the Sporting Life 10K race.  A group of runners where on this sensor mat, and they were running in spot, like they were in the race.

Overall, it was a fun experience.  See you on the roads… Happy Running!
