Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition where a joint in your body becomes worn down and degenerated. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people around the world. While osteoarthritis can damage any joint in your body, the disorder most commonly affects joints in your hands, neck, lower back, knees and hips.

Symptoms:

The main symptom is pain, causing loss of motion and often stiffness. Pain is commonly described as a sharp and achy. OA can cause a grinding noise (called “crepitus”) when the joint is moved. Occasionally, the joints may also be filled with fluid and can become swollen. Humid and cold weather increases the pain in many cases.

OA commonly affects the hands, feet, spine, and the large weight bearing joints, such as the hips and knees. As OA progresses, the degenerating joints will appear larger, as well as become stiff and painful. Symptoms usually feel better with gentle use but worse with excessive/prolonged use.

Common Causes:

Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down over time. Cartilage is a firm, smooth tissue that allows nearly frictionless joint motion. In osteoarthritis, the surface of the cartilage becomes rough and thinner. Eventually, with repetitive/chronic friction, the cartilage will wear down completely, and you may be left with bone rubbing on bone.

Treatment:

Chiropractic Treatment, Acupuncture and Prescription Stretches/Exercises.

Chiropractic Care:

Chiropractors can diagnose and treat Osteoarthritis and other joint related conditions. Various treatment options (ie: manipulation, soft tissue therapy, acupuncture, stretches, exercises) may be used to help to decrease pain and restore movement. Osteoarthritis is very amendable with conservative treatment. Chiropractic Care can help you get back to your daily activities with less pain and improved function. Don’t let your pain stop you from engaging in your daily activities.
