Do you have pain in the inner thigh with activities such as walking or running?


Are you unable to play because of your pain?


If so, you may be suffering from a Groin Strain. Groin Strains are commonly caused by a sudden overstretching of the muscles in your groin area (adductors) during activities such as soccer, skiing, hockey,tennis, running and gymnastics.


Symptoms usually begin as a sudden painful twinge, localized to the groin area. As activity continues without allowing for adequate rest, it becomes more chronic. As the injury persists and the pain becomes chronic, activities such as sprinting, soccer and swimming may become difficult or limited.


Groin strains are caused by an overstretching of the inner thigh muscles that attach to the upper groin area; either by sudden forceful movements or repeated stress over time.

Risk Factors:

Groin strains are common injuries most often seen in young athletes and comprise approximately 2-5% of all sports related complaints. Activities that involve ballistic movements such as rapid acceleration in sprints, speed skating and hockey increase the risk of groin strains occurring. Overuse of the adductor muscles with distance running and cumulative repetitive micro-trauma also increase the risk of experiencing groin strains. Inadequate conditioning/warm up can also increase risk of developing groin strains.

Groin pain may be a symptom of other more serious injuries such as labral tears, sports hernia or joint degeneration and should be assessed if the pain persists for more than 1-2 weeks to avoid further injury.

Chiropractic care can help with the diagnosis and treatment of Groin Strains and other leg related pain. Various treatment options (i.e. acupuncture, electrotherapy, stretches, exercises) may be used to help to decrease pain and restore movement.
