Set on a colourful Greek island, the plot serves as a background for a wealth of ABBA songs. A young woman, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) who is about to be married discovers that any one of three men: Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Bill (Stellan Skarsgård) and Harry (Colin Firth) could be her father. She invites all three to the wedding without telling her mother, Donna (Meryl Streep), who was once the lead singer of Donna and the Dynamos. In the meantime, Donna has invited her backup singers, Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) to assist in the wedding.
Aside from Pierce Brosnan’s awful singing, the music in this movie was wonderful. I didn’t realize that I knew so many ABBA songs, because each ABBA musical number that played was very familiar to me; I was even mouthing the words through out. The story started out a bit goofy, however the goofiness starts to grow on you and you end up loving the cheesy characters at the end. Mamma Mia was pure musical in movie form. There were a number of choreographed dance numbers where random townspeople would come on screen and start dancing in unison.
Overall, I would give this movie 9/10 stars. Others might now find it as good as me, but they probably aren’t huge ABBA fans. If you love ABBA, you’ll love this movie. Happy Viewing!
