In this movie, two best friends, Jason Fryman (Adam Scott) & Julie Keller (Jennifer Westfeldt) are enjoying their yuppy-life with their core group of friends, Leslie & Alex (Maya Rudolph & Chris O’Dowd) and Ben & Missy (Jon Hamm & Kristen Wiig). As Jason & Julie’s friends start having children, they notice that the dynamic of their core friendship is starting to shift. Jason & Julie start feeling left out and they feel that they can no longer relate to their friend’s new lives. Jason & Julie decide to have a child together while keeping their relationship platonic, so they can avoid the toll kids can take on romantic relationships. Even after their son Joe is born, Jason & Julie continue to date other people while sharing custody of their son. Jason meets Mary Jane (Megan Fox), a gorgeous, self-absorbed actress who becomes the new love of Jason’s life. While Julie meets Kurt (Edward Burns), the hunky divorcee who is the perfect hunk that Julie had been searching for. Eventually, Jason & Julie realize that their own friendship was the actual romance that each had been missing in their lives.
Overall, I really liked this movie. It wasn’t big on laughs, but there were numerous moments here and there that made me smile. Perhaps I related more to this movie because I have kids of my own, and maybe if I didn’t, some of the concepts and inside jokes would be foreign to me. I did feel that the movie under-utilized the skills of some of the supporting actors. Four actors from the hilarious movie “Bridesmaids” were in this film, however their parts were very short and they could have been given more screen time to liven up the movie. Yet, the lines they did get were quite memorable.
I would give this movie a sweet 7/10 stars. It is definitely a movie worth watching. Happy Viewing!
